Mark Dowd, a lawyer who worked for the Obama administration team that oversaw the 2009 restructurings of General Motors and Chrysler Group, has been hired as assistant general counsel at the Association of Global Automakers.
The association, headquartered in Washington, represents 13 foreign automakers, including Aston Martin, Ferrari, Honda Motor Co., Hyundai-Kia Automotive, Isuzu, Maserati, McLaren, Nissan Motor Co., Peugeot, Subaru, Suzuki and Toyota Motor Corp.
Dowd was a senior member of President Obama's Auto Task Force, which oversaw the bailouts of GM and Chrysler. Most recently, he was a senior adviser on the White House's Hurricane Sandy Task Force after a stint on the Council on Environmental Quality in 2012.
His background is in environmental litigation and complex transactions.
Ellen Gleberman, the Association of Global Automakers' general counsel, said in a statement: "We are very pleased to have Dowd on our team. He brings a wealth of legal and political experience that makes him a very valuable asset to the organization and our members."
Dowd's hiring comes a month after longtime lobbyist Michael Stanton said that he will retire as president and CEO of the association in early 2014.
The association has been expanding its staff since February 2011 to add policy experts in environmental issues, state and federal affairs, safety and communications. With the addition of Dowd, the association will have 17 employees, and intends to add an additional state relations manager.
The association moved from Virginia to Washington in December 2010 and changed its name from the Association of International Automobile Manufacturers in 2011.
