Ford GT stars in 'Forza Motorsport 6' video game ad

The Ford GT zooms through the pixelated history of racing video games in a new commercial for the upcoming “Forza Motorsport 6” on the Xbox One.

The speedy GT, which will grace the cover of the latest Forza installment, zips past its primitive forefathers from classic racing games going all the way back to 1974’s “Gran Trak 10” by Atari.

The 90-second ad will be seen around the world this weekend during the Formula One Italian Grand Prix. It was developed by agency twofifteenmccann.

The commercial is a nostalgic timeline as the virtual GT invades the worlds of “Gran Trak 10,” 1982’s “Pole Position,” 1987’s “RC Pro Am,” 1988’s “Chase HQ” and 1993’s “Ridge Racer.” The upbeat song "Danger! High Voltage" serves as the backdrop for the ad, which is peppered with arcade-like sound effects that make it an aural journey as well as a visual one. The song is performed by Detroit band Electric Six.

After journeying through history in the spot, the GT returns to the photorealistic era of modern gaming in ”Forza Motorsport 6.”

The GT integration highlights the branding opportunities for automakers in video games. “Forza Motorsport 6” is to be released Sept. 15.

The new Ford F-150 Raptor and Shelby GT350R Mustang that were unveiled during the Detroit auto show this year will be in the game, too.

“Let’s face it, [the GT] is going to be an extremely exclusive vehicle,” Steve Ling, Ford’s North America car marketing manager, told Automotive News during January’s Detroit auto show, where the game was announced. “So to be able to bring it to the masses where they can drive, that was part of the master plan, and to be able to do it with Forza, who is the undisputed leader for these sorts of cars, it’s a match made in heaven.”
