A solid-state of mind at Hyundai, Samsung

Editor’s note: A previous version of this story misstated the title for Euisun Chung.

The heirs apparent of two of South Korea's biggest industrial dynasties, Hyundai and Samsung, met last month for the first time to talk business. Topping the agenda: their mutual interest in next-generation electric vehicle batteries.

The summit between Hyundai Motor Group Executive Vice Chairman Euisun Chung and Samsung Vice Chairman Jay Lee took place at Samsung SDI's battery-making complex in Cheonan, south of Seoul. Lee gave his automotive counterpart a tour and briefed the Hyundai mogul and other top brass on the electronics giant's progress in developing solid-state batteries.

The talks could signal the arrival of a new global battery powerhouse as Hyundai Motor Group ramps up a major electrification push. The Hyundai, Kia and Genesis brands plan to introduce 44 electrified models by 2025, including 23 full-electric vehicles.
