A rousing start for small crossovers

It isn't too big yet, but the emerging small crossover category is off to a good start.

In May, Honda sold 6,381 of its new Mexico-built HR-Vs; Chevrolet sold 5,707 units of the Trax, also built in Mexico; and Jeep sold 4,416 of its Italy-built Renegades, helping the Jeep brand set a sales record in May.

"The new B-segment SUVs ... are performing well," said IHS Automotive analyst Tom Libby.

He added: "The Trax, HR-V and Renegade do not seem to be impacting sales of their larger siblings," referring to the Chevy Equinox, Honda CR-V and Jeep Cherokee.

The HR-V "is easily outselling its fresh competition, though these small utes account for less than 6 percent share at any of their respective brands," Libby said.

The Trax went on sale in December, and sales of the Renegade began in March.

The new entries helped the compact crossover segment grow by 18 percent in May, compared with the same month last year.

Led by the CR-V, with sales of 32,090 last month, compact cross-overs accounted for 256,139 units in May.
