16,531,070 U.S. sales -- and a near-perfect guess from Canada

Never underestimate the value of an email. And an educated guess. At least if you’re Amanda Morvan, general manager of O’Regan’s Kia Dartmouth in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

Morvan, 37, was signed up for Automotive News updates when she came across an email about a contest sponsored by the rebuilt Automotive News Data Center.

The contest was simple: guess the correct number of light vehicles sold in the U.S. last year and win a paid trip to the 2015 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California.

With two days left in the contest, Morvan submitted her number. Of the 1,062 entries received from Dec. 10 through Dec. 31, hers was by far the closest.

How close? She was off by only 42. The actual sales number was 16,531,070. Her guess: 16,531,112. It was 99.999746 percent accurate. How did she do it? Morvan said she had been reading about the strong auto sales numbers all year.

“I guessed it would be over 16 million,” said Morvan. “I just kind of came across the six other digits by chance.”

Morvan says this is the first contest she has ever won. It will also be her first trip to Pebble Beach.

Her prize package includes: Delta Air Lines airfare, a three-night stay at the Bay Park Hotel, two tickets to the Concours d’Elegance, guided tours of the show field and a dash plaque like the one provided to each Concours entry.

She said she plans on extending the trip by a few days when it comes around in August.
