Ghosn plans 12 new EVs, more platform sharing

PARIS — Nissan and Renault will expand their electric car offerings and dig deeper for cost savings in component sourcing and manufacturing under a new six-year business plan announced here late last week by Renault-Nissan Alliance Chairman Carlos Ghosn.

Ghosn said the partners — including the newest Alliance member, Mitsubishi Motors — will introduce 12 new full-electric vehicles by 2022, using next-generation batteries that have greater driving range and lower costs than those the company is using today.

Also by 2022, Renault and Nissan will launch 40 vehicle models with various levels of self-driving capabilities, including at least one that won't require any human intervention.

At the same time, Ghosn said, the companies will accelerate their work to share global vehicle platforms as a move to bring down vehicle development costs.

By 2022, Ghosn said, the group will build more than 9 million of its vehicles on four shared platforms. As of 2016, the company had two shared platforms that yielded 2 million vehicles.

The shared architectures will account for 70 percent of sales by 2022, with common engines installed in 75 percent of the vehicles, he said.
